Part II: Patrick McSharry is a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University Africa and co-author of Big Data Revolution, a book that considers “data as the new oil” and discusses how companies can use data as intellectual property. Vijay Pratap Singh Aditya of Ekgaon Technologies spoke with McSharry for SME Futures on steps to put big data analytics to use, discrete sources of data and the dearth of data scientists. McSharry feels that the state can both use and misuse big data and rights groups across the world are very sensitive overarching projects, like an Aadhaar-type national ID. He feels that eventually countries will find a way to reach the middle ground between privacy rights and mining citizens’ data.
